Blackburn Aircraft Ltd
Civil engineer Robert Blackburn saw Wilbur Wright fly in France and immediately left his job in Rouen, France to return to England and start designing his own aircraft. The Blackburn Aeroplane & Motor Co. was set up in June 1914 and produced other designers' aircraft during WW1. Blackburn started producing marine aircraft at Brough, South Yorkshire from 1929 onwards. These were torpedo-bombers and large flying boats, production continuing through WW2. The company took over General Aircraft in 1949, to become Blackburn & General Aircraft. This resulted in the Beverley freight transport and the Buccaneer. Robert Blackburn died in 1955, and the company was soon taken over by the Hawker Siddeley Group. It thus became Hawker Blackburn Division before losing its identity in 1965.
