CAC (Australia)

The Commonwealth Aircraft Corporation (CAC) was established in 1936, to provide Australia with the capability to produce military aircraft and engines. By September 1937 a factory had been completed at Port Melbourne and Lawrence Wackett, an aircraft designer, became the General Manager. The first aircraft to be produced was the Wirraway, based on the North American NA-16. The company produced fighter aircraft during WW2 and continued after the war to produce jet fighters, trainers and helicopters. In 1985 CAC became a subsidiary of Hawker de Havilland and lost its identity.
