Bölkow Bo 209 Monsun D-EFJLPhotographed at the Schleissheim Air & Space Museum on 2 September 2010.
This is a 2-seater all-metal sporting and touring Aircraft, which started out as a home-build, designed on the personal initiative of the Light Aircraft Design Group headed by Hermann Mylius and made up of engineers and technicians working for Bölkow in Ottobrunn, near Munich.
After 2 years of development and construction work, the first flight took place on December 22, 1967 in Laupheim, Germany. Production continued until 1972, with exactly 100 planes completed.
Several variants of the Monsun were offered with engines ranging in power from 85-118 kW. A clever feature was the folding wings, which made hangar parking easier and saved on storage fees. With the wings folded it was also possible to tow the Monsun by car on the road.
The aircraft seen here is still authorised to fly.
Manufacturer: Messerschmitt-Bölkow-Blohm GmbH, Laupheim, Germany, 1971.
Cruising speed: 255 km/h, Power plant: 118 kW Lycoming IO-320 flat-four engine.
A lovely little aircraft, I think.
