Avro CF-100 'Canuck'

Avro CF-100 'Canuck'. At an open air exposition in The Reynolds-Alberta museum, Wetaskivin, Alberta.

My friend, Butch Foster of Calgary, an RCAF veteran, flew this jet in
early 60s. It was funny, how once he told me story of chaising a Soviet Il-28 in Europe where he served in one of NATO's deployments during 'Cold War'. Now, some 40 years past, Butch is building a replica of the Soviet WWII fighter Yak-1, while myself flying for a Canadian airline. What a change! :)

Hi Marcel,

By the way, just yesterday I read an article in 'National Post' on Don Rogers, Avro's cheif test pilot, who died last week in Toronto, at the age of 89.
He test-flew this type, that was, as they put it in the newspaper, '..designed in the 1950s to intercept Russian bombers'.

I bought a CF-100 documentary video, and am going to invite Butch for a 'live comments&reconciliation party'. With Russian vodka, and toasts to aviation :)).

The first flight of the two seater twin engined fighter Avro Canada CF-100 was 19 January 1950. It was specifically designed to fulfil a gap: there was no British interceptor that as a jet nightfighter could operate from Arctic airstrips. It had topspeed of 650 mph / 1046 kmh and a range of 2000 miles / 3200 km.
