Convair 5800 C-FKFSThe concept of "stretching" a basic aircraft to increase its payload has been applied successfully to many types of aircraft for decades. The engineering principles established through these years of experience are evident in the construction of the 5800.
Several excellent existing aircraft are used to create a 5800 - the CV 340, 440, 580, and C131 E/F.
The "stretch" is accomplished by cutting apart both fore and aft of the wings. "Plugs" are then built into these areas. The forward plug is 7 feet, 11 inches long, and the aft plug 6 feet, 4 inches. Additional structural modifications are also made at selected points to carry the additional loads. It should be emphasized that all systems (hydraulic, electrical, etc.) passing through the plug joints are lengthened without using any splices. All wiring, tubing and ducting are replaced between the nearest junction boxes and fittings, etc., thereby maintaining original systems reliability throughout the aircraft.
