5 Things to Think About When Renovating an Old House

June 15, 2021 by Alexa Leave a Comment

Many people dream of restoring an old house. Not only does it mean we can preserve the beautiful old buildings we have, but it can also give you a wonderful home to live in.

Renovating a house is not without its challenges, though, which can be particularly true with old buildings. So, to help with your project, here are five things to think about when renovating an old house.

Be On Top of Your Budget

In many older homes, sloping floors are a very common problem. When a sloping floor is a sign of foundation failure, you’ll probably notice other problems. For example, you might see ceiling cracks, gaps between the walls and the floor or ceiling, doors, and windows that stick, etc.

Renovating an old house is not easy. You are taking something that’s potentially hundreds of years old and bringing it up to modern-day standards, and there can be a lot of expenses involved in this.

This means you’ve got to be good with your budgeting.

You need to make this work for you financially, which means being realistic about what you can afford and what it will cost you. Also, make sure you leave a surplus to cover unforeseen expenses and not overstretch yourself.

Think About the Things You Cannot See

For many people, it is easy to go around a house and picture all the renovations they would make to the interior. However, it is much more challenging to consider all the bits you cannot see.

When you are renovating an old house, then chances are there is a lot of work to do on the bits you cannot see, and you must get these jobs right. When it comes to things like roofing, make sure you are working with experienced shoreline roofing companies and get the job done properly.

This goes for all the bits you cannot see – they are just as important as the bits you can see.

Foundation repair is often expensive. If you notice any warning signs, your foundation may be failing.  Avoiding these repairs will widen cracks and cause more structural damage. Widened cracks can also welcome unwanted visitors such as rodents and insects. So if you notice any sign of foundation damage – immediately contact a foundation repair contractor for an inspection.

If you’re noticing vertical cracks in your foundation, you’re probably wondering if they’re serious enough to worry about. If it’s no wider than 1/10 of an inch, then vertical cracks in your foundation are not serious.

Original Features

A renovation should not be all about out with the old and in with the new.

One of the reasons you bought an old building was because of its charm, and you want to preserve this wherever you can. Original features can add so much to a house, so make sure you are working them into your plans.

It is amazing what a little restoration work can do, so do not write off original features.

Take Your Time

Naturally, you will have deadlines for your project, but you must not rush your renovation. But, again, it is something where you have to be realistic and accept it might take more time than you would like.

If it comes to a choice between doing quality work and meeting an unrealistic deadline, then quality work should win every time.

Make sure you are giving yourself time to do the best possible job.

Prepare for the Unexpected

You can be almost certain you will come across something unexpected. Unfortunately, that is just the nature of restoring old houses.

The best thing that you can do is accept this fact and prepare for the unexpected. Factor it into your budget and deadline, and make sure you are not putting yourself under unnecessary pressure.

It is about how you overcome the challenges, and if you are prepared, this will be much easier.
